Yes, he was used in what are reffered to as Wartime Cartoons.
Whoa!, I had no idea what the past was like for both Warner Brothers and Disney animation…But this next video clip stoops to an all time low for both shock value and it’s crude racial undertone.
…and what’s worse is that Bugs Bunny was one of my favorite cartoon characters to watch while growing up…I could never have imagined that he would be used to try and sell U.S. War Bonds … I guess that shows how naive a child’s mind can be… especially my own.
All in all, propaganda/advertising is even more ubiquitous these days, so I guess we’ll have to just shrug this one off…er…
Moving on…
This is an example of one of the many short wartime cartoons that were shown during World War 2. Enjoy!
Bugs was such a Tool!

The war bond ads were some of the milder wartime propaganda cartoons. Visit some of the others on YouTube, like “Tokio Jokio”, etc. As to “…how naive a child’s mind can be…”, remember: during this time, there was NO TV; people got their news on the radio, AND from shorts shown at movies. Cartoons produced during this time were intended to show at theaters, primarily to adult audiences.
You are looking at 1943 with 2011 eyes. Blackface and Al Jolsen were part of that era. And everyone was behind the idea of fighting Hitler. What’s wrong with Bugs selling War Bonds?

Sweet! I find these films to be really interesting from a historical point of view. I will dig deeper for the radio broadcasts. Growing up I never noticed the adult humor in many of the cartoons I watched. But, as I grew up I began to catch on, things are not what they seem. Thanks for the comment =)
